ARTIST STATEMENT

The creation of my artwork is a form of emotionally self-soothing therapy. I have been out of touch with my emotional state for most of my life, focusing only on the intellectual aspects of my consciousness. This leads to an overwhelming build up of emotion, both positive and negative. Art is the only way I can deal with and express this emotion honestly, which is what drives me to create. I process and expel this emotional build-up by running these sensations and thoughts through the intellectual part of my brain, which is responsible for many of my ideas and technical skills. I tend to incorporate elements like bright, saturated color in my pieces intended to invoke more energy, and high contrast and desaturation in my moodier pieces to accurately express the depressed state the pieces are intended to convey. Though my work shares a commonality through these aspects, because I am an emotionally-based artist, I want my viewers to feel, rather than analyze, my work. I deeply believe that the most moving art derives its meaning through being impactfully unexplainable.
My choices of color, medium, texture, and subject matter are all carefully selected based on the emotional spillage I choose to express through my work. My most melancholy head-spaces are expressed usually through my portrait work, which most often depict colorless, distraught faces or expressions of sorrow or indifference. These pieces are unique to my mood, which I will often allow myself to drown in to ease myself into the mindset I need to be in to process these emotions. I dance these emotions into my artwork, simply allowing myself to sit with the feeling it creates. Sometimes, however, I create my artwork to change my mood rather than changing my mood to create my art. Landscape paintings are my form of escape. Rather than dealing with my negative emotions through my artwork, I make landscape paintings to uplift myself and create a feeling of security and peace, often when I am the happiest, creating both works of art and a healthier outlook in my life.
